Knowing how to draw a golf ball is a skill that requires some practice but when you have that knowledge it can help you play better golf and cut your handicap.
What is a draw in golf? It basically means that you shape the flight of the ball from right to left, this is for a right handed player, obviously it is the opposite for a leftie.
Why would you want to draw a golf ball? The advantages of being able to perform this shot are numerous but the two most important ones are that the golf ball will travel further when played this way and the second is that if you are playing a dog leg fairway you can bring the ball round the corner.
To play a draw shot requires a subtle change in your golf stance and a flexibility in your wrists. The plan is to bring the clubface down onto the ball slightly closed and then turn it over through impact.
Set up to the ball in the normal way, shoulders, hips and feet all parallel to the target line, remember to be parallel to the target not pointing at it. You are to the left of the ball so your body must be lined up left of the target. Think train tracks, you are one rail the ball is the other.
Now move your back foot backwards slightly, your body will turn to the right but keep the clubface still. You have effectively closed the clubface. This will cause the club to swing down from inside the ball, that is on your side of it, to the outside. This action at impact will generate a counter clockwise spin on the ball.
When you swing your golf club ensure you do so along your feet line, do not try to adjust for the angle of the target line. Draw the club back smoothly and low to the ground creating width to the swing.
At the top of the back swing keep the motion smooth as you reverse direction, aiming to drop the right elbow into your waist. This will get the club coming into the ball from the inside and up.
Swing through completely allowing your forearms to swap position, this ensures that your hands release through the ball further enhancing the draw spin. Watch as your ball starts down the right side of the fairway and gently turns in to the centre, bounces and roll for another forty yards.
To conclude a simple technique for remembering how to draw golf balls is: Feet pointing to where the ball starts, clubface pointing to where you want it to finish
